Hazel Cake

Celebrations are incomplete without sweets and if it’s a cake, it’s a complete Heaven Right!! But it’s little scary now to go to a cake shop and get one when the COVID cases are up surging. But worry not, Hazel Cakes is always ready to deliver the yummiest and alluring cake for you.

Aren’t you curious about how they do it? Find out below in our conversation with the co-founder of Hazel cake, Umesh Shah.

1 Do you deliver yourself or have you hired a logistic company?

We deliver ourselves. We have 4 delivery staff with a total team of 13.

2 How long does it take for a product to reach a customer once they have ordered it from you?

The customer will get the cake within 45 minutes of an order placed, any date, any time as per requirement. We also provide midnight delivery service.

3 Do the customers have to bear the delivery charge?

It’s free delivery inside the ring road and a certain charge other than that with cash on delivery.  We cart all over Kathmandu valley, Chitwan and are planning to expand to Butwal and Biratnagar.

4 How do you pack your product to ensure it safely reaches the customer?

In the first place, the cake is frozen so that it won’t crumble. They are then packed on our customized cardboard box exclusively designed to encase the cake safely.

5 How do you ensure product safety during transit?

The cake is loaded in a delivery bag especially designed to carry the cake according to its structure and size. It keeps the cake safe during transit.

6 Is there any return policy?

There is no return policy as of now.

7 Do you provide any special Packaging to create the first impression of your brand?

Yes, we share greeting cards with the cakes to share our good wishes and also provide sparkles, candles, cake knives, balloons as complementary.

8 Why did you choose to deliver by yourself instead of hiring the logistics company?

I couldn’t find the logistics company in particular designed to deliver cakes. However, when delivering ourselves we have the advantage of training the delivery staff to handle cake, ensure safe delivery during Covid-19 situation and do prompt delivery. We found this to be faster. We also deliver at midnight which isn’t be possible from logistic companies.

9 What are the major challenges you face in delivery of the products?

Weather is one of the leading challenge for us. During the rainy day, it gets difficult to deliver the cake and during summer the cakes melt faster. Other than that the customer doesn’t receive a call after delivery staff reach the destination due to which 2 to 3 cakes get returned weekly. And also the traffic is another issue. Further the guidelines brought in due to the COVID-19 crisis has added more challenges.

10. Can you share one good and bad experience/ challenges for delivering to the customer?

Once our customer ordered at the very last hour for a midnight celebration. We were about to close but we didn’t wanted to ruin his happy moments. So, we made a cake out of the things we had and got it delivered to him within an hour. He was very happy and satisfied with our service. He was also the one who encouraged us to deliver the cake at midnight.

One bad experience happened recently, we delivered a cake to our customer. He took a cake and said his home was near and will return with money. But he didn’t, he even switched off his phone later. That was a horrible experience.

Deego Nepal

Deego Nepal is a startup that has been actively promoting sustainable lifestyle by offering Eco friendly and plastic alternatives to reduce its wastage. Find out how this, sustainable startup has been delivering its products to its customers through a third party logistic company in our conversation with the Co-Founder, Ms. Anjana Malla.

  1. Do you deliver by yourself or have you hired a logistic company?

We do both actually. We delivered through a logistics company and also have a rider in contract.

2. How long does it take for a product to reach a customer once they have ordered it?

The customer will receive an order the next day inside the valley and take a few days outside Kathmandu valley.

3. Do the customers have to bear the delivery charge?

Yes, The customers have to pay certain delivery charges.

4. How do you pack your product to ensure it safely reaches the customer?

The products are wrapped on the handmade newspaper bags. They are then topped in the boxes for delivery outside the Valley.

5. How do you ensure product safety during transit?

The logistics company picks up the product, then they place the product on their delivery bag safely. We haven’t faced the problem of damage as such on transit till date.

6. Is there any return policy?

No, we don’t have a return policy as of now. But we do take bag the defect and damaged products.

7. Do you provide any special Packaging to create the first impression of your brand?

Yes, we do that. We make the newspaper bag ourselves with the sticker of Deego Nepal on it. We also send a Thank you note and a visiting card with it.

8. Why did you choose to hire a logistics Company to deliver the products?

There is no certainty in  terms of numbers of order we receive. Somedays we get huge number of orders and someday the orders are very less. So, we feel that a logistics company is best for us to handle this situation. In addition, with logistics handled by a third party we are left with lots of time to focus on other operational activities.

9. What are the major challenges concerning delivery of the products?

If the logistics company couldn’t deliver the product at a committed time, the order gets cancelled. Having a good and clear communication with a logistic company is also challenging.

10. What are the advantage of using a logistics company for delivery?

It saves our time and we don’t have to worry a lot about delivery aspect, they take complete responsibility. It reduces the burden.

11. Do you have any suggestions for the logistic company?

We are satisfied with the service of a logistics company. But yes, if they could deliver on time, and communicate well regarding delivery, payment and everything it would be better.

12. Can you share one good and bad experience/ challenges for delivering to the customer.

One of our customers ordered a surprise gift for her friend. We packaged the product well, attached a Happy Birthday card and got it delivered on time. She was super happy not only with the quality of our products but our prompt delivery service too.

Talking about a bad experience, we had to deliver outside of the valley and committed to deliver within 5 days. We cart through the courier. The customer didn’t receive the call and the courier too didn’t follow up on her again. The product got stock in the office and she received it quite later than expected. We get quite a problem regarding delivery outside of the valley.

We had an interesting conversation with the Co-Founder of Green Growth, Mr. Nischal Pokhrel, regarding how delivery looks like in case of a business where the products are extremely perishable and have a relatively short shelf life.

  1. Do you deliver it by yourself or have you hired a logistic company?

Yes, we do it by ourselves. We have delivery staff to do for us.

2. How long does it take for a product to reach a customer once they have ordered it from you?

We deliver within 24 hours. But you can place your order for any day. In terms of vegetables, you have to place your order at least a day before your preferable day by 12 noon.

3. Do the customers have to bear the delivery charge?

The customers have to bear the legitimate charge range from Rs.50 to Rs.150

4. How do you pack your product to ensure it safely reaches the customer?

The vegetables and fruits are delivered in the cartoon. However the other products like pulses, turmeric are packed on the plastic.

5. Is there any return policy?

Yes, the customer can return the product if they don’t like it.

6. Do you provide any special Packaging to create the first impression of your brand?

For the dry products, the packaging has all the details of product, locations and Green Growth’s branding on it.

7. Why did you choose to do deliver by yourself?

When delivering the products on our own, we can deal with customer directly, get their feedback, and can solve the problems instantly if any. But with logistic companies, we are not in touch with the customers and their feedback might not reach us. This is the reason why we choose to do it by ourselves especially to monitor the delivery activities.

8. What are the major challenges you face concerning delivery of the products?

It’s very difficult to find the location and home of customers. We don’t get the correct location from the customer. That’s the first challenge. Also, sometimes the customer doesn’t receive a call when we reach their stated location.

9. Can you  share one good and bad experience/ challenges when delivering to the customer.

Yes. Our very first customer is still with us and orders vegetables every week. Seeing a regular customer from the last 3 years makes us happy.

The bad experience happens when the customer doesn’t receive a call. We move to another destination, then they call us and ask us to deliver faster which is really difficult for us.
