Kathmandu Metropolitan City successfully conducted a pre-briefing session. It was a compulsory session for all the selected entrepreneurs. Smart Urban Technology Challenge 2018 is a platform for creative and innovative Nepalese youths to use modern technologies to solve problems related to urban development by taking the geography of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) as their pilot area. The initiative seeks youths from various backgrounds to identify problems related to urban development in Kathmandu and put forward their creative ideas to solve the identified problems. This initiative attempts to mitigate the existing problem of unemployment and migration of youth for foreign employment by providing skills and training to the aspiring entrepreneurs through an innovative platform.
The challenge is focused on four categories broad categories related to urban development – Community and Environment, Urban Infrastructure, Metropolitan Community Services, and Metropolitan Administration and Efficiency. These categories have been further divided into 28 subcategories on which the aspiring participants can submit their innovative ideas.
With the last day of submission of the idea being 14th Jan 2019, KMC received almost 500 ideas as applications. The ideas were evaluated based on Importance of Problem, Product, Business Model, Scalability and Presentation and Articulation. Initially, 142 ideas have been selected. The participating teams will go through three months of training and mentoring before submission of minimum viable products (MVP). A team of the jury will judge all the MVPs in reference to judging criteria and select 6 finalists from each category resulting in 24 finalists. The finalists will compete during the main event – Grand Finale. Based on the selection criteria, the jury will select category winners, runner-ups and overall winner.
